Kbrooks' Biography Reviews
Gay/Lesbian
Running with Scissors
by Augusten Burroughs
Augusten Burroughs' novels are funny, witty and just a delight to read. Some of the things he writes about are things you would think about, but never dare say out loud. In this first memoir, he writes about his mother who dreams of being a poet. She walks the line of sanity/insanity, and it is not always clear which side of the line she is on. Young Augusten loves her though with all of her flaws. She befriends her psychiatrist who ends up with custody of Augusten for a period of time. His house is an eccentric dwelling and Augusten encounters many shady characters there, including one man who becomes his first gay lover at the age oftwelve. The story is very interesting and Burroughs' writing style is punched with humor at just the right times. One of my favorite authors. I give it **** out of five stars.
